A new survey conducted by the office of State Assemblyman Fred W. Thiele Jr. revealed that a little more than half the gas stations on the South Fork were priced below the state average for a gallon of gasoline.
Of the 28 East Hampton and Southampton gas stations surveyed in November, 16 were found to be at or below the state average for a gallon of gasoline, or $2.68.
In western Southampton Town, where the price fluctuation ranges between $2.55 and $2.99 per gallon, six of nine surveyed gas stations were priced below the state average. In eastern Southampton Town, the price fluctuated between $2.53 and $2.67 per gallon, and each of the surveyed gas stations was priced below the state average.
But in East Hampton Town, where the fluctuation in price is greatest—ranging from $2.65 to $3.43 per gallon—only one of eight stations surveyed was priced below the state average.
The results of the survey come at a time when the price for a barrel of crude oil has increased, from $53 per barrel in October to $57 in November. Despite the global increase in oil prices, Mr. Thiele notes that only half of the South Fork’s stations saw an increase in the price of gasoline, whereas 12 of the 28 stations surveyed saw no increase at all.
