Swimmers were pulled out of the water at Quogue Village Beach Tuesday afternoon, July 4, after a man was bitten by “a shark of unknown species,” police said.

The victim, a 47-year-old man, was swimming in chest deep water when he was bitten, according to police, and suffered lacerations to his knee and was treated on shore first by village lifeguards. He was then transported to Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead for treatment of injuries described as non-lifethreatening.

The call came in to Quogue Village Police headquarters at approximately 1:50 p.m. No shark was actually sighted by anyone, but police said the bite was clearly from a large marine animal.

Police notified surrounding beaches and advised swimmers to stay out of the water until the situation could be assessed.

This is the fourth time in two days reports of bitten swimmers have surfaced. Earlier on July 4, there was a report of an incident in the water off Fire Island Pines; a man was bitten in the hand. And on Monday, two more cases of bites by large marine animals were reported — off Robert Moses Beach and Kismet Beach upisland to the west.

The New York State Department of environmental Conservation hosts a page where shark sightings may be reported at on.ny.gov/sharks.
