Take a Closer Look

I am writing as a concerned resident of a quiet, longstanding neighborhood in Southampton Town that is currently being disrupted by a new construction project that seems to have little regard for community standards, environmental responsibility or proper permitting procedures.

A neighbor has recently built a home that starkly contrasts with the character of our quaint neighborhood. While aesthetic differences are subjective, what cannot be ignored are the multiple code violations that have occurred throughout this construction — all of which have been consistently marked as “unfounded” by both the Town of Southampton’s Code Enforcement and Building departments.

This property was previously occupied via a camper parked on site, and now, despite the home being unfinished and without a certificate of occupancy, it appears the residents have moved in. Additionally, foam board insulation, affixed to the exterior of the house, has repeatedly blown into neighboring yards and even into the surrounding wetlands, a clear environmental concern. Residents have found debris in their pools, causing damage to filtration systems. Despite numerous complaints, no meaningful action has been taken by the town.

There is a growing concern that this situation reflects a broader issue of preferential treatment or bias within the enforcement of building and environmental codes. It is deeply troubling that violations impacting both neighbors and the natural landscape are being dismissed without consequence.

Our community deserves fair and equal enforcement of town codes, not selective oversight. I urge town officials and the public to take a closer look at this situation, and I thank The Southampton Press for providing a platform to bring these concerns to light.
