I urge the Southampton Town Planning Board not to approve the Hampton Bays BESS after giving particular attention to the example of the Chandler, Arizona, BESS fire.

That fire smoldered for two weeks, during which time the Chandler authorities instituted a quarter-mile radius evacuation. Were that evacuation to occur here, not only would both Route 27 and the railroad be shut down but the range of the evacuation would reach the two related bridges.

I hope the Planning Board also is taking into consideration that Canal Southampton Battery Storage LLC (the promoter of the Hampton Bays BESS) is registered with New York State as “Entity Type: Foreign Limited Liability Company.” If something goes wrong, will this foreign LLC act responsibly, or will it declare bankruptcy and disappear, and leave Hamptons taxpayers to fund the cleanup the disastrous mess the “LLC” created?
