Every morning between 6 and 7, I take a walk with my dog, Stella, along the roads of my Water Mill neighborhood. And every morning, rain or shine, I see sprinklers drowning the lawns. Some of them are even, ever so helpfully, watering the roads, since no one seems to have directed them to actually hit only the grass.
Yesterday (Sunday), we had torrential rain — how many inches fell I have no idea — but Mecox Bay appeared overflowing and puddles were full. And, yet, this morning, the sprinklers were still going full tilt.
Is it so hard to turn the systems off when they are not needed? Or to water every other day? Or to obey Suffolk County Water Authority’s request to water on odd and even days?
This is a terrible waste. What will it take for people to wake up?

I enjoyed Jenny Noble’s article “Composting for Dummies” [Arts & Living, April 17]. She taught me about brown and green, which I have started to incorporate into my compost. Three compost methods that I have been using for many years...
The Express News Group editorial board never misses an opportunity to take a swing at President Donald Trump, but choosing to do so during Memorial Day, a day set aside to honor those who served and those who passed away,...
In 2022, I voted for the present Southampton Village mayor, Bill Manger. Like many of you, I was duped. As Abraham Lincoln said, “… You can fool some of the people all the time, but you cannot fool all the...
A friend just bought my attention to the letter by Ed Surgan, who states that I want to raise your (who is your?) taxes [“It’s Politics,” Letters, May 22]. I said nothing of the sort. I suggested that we need...
