If you are a registered Democrat in the 1st Congressional District, don’t forget to vote in the primary election on June 25. The 1st District encompasses the eastern two-thirds of Suffolk County. It is currently represented by Republican Nick LaLota, who lives in Amityville, which is not in CD1. Both Democratic candidates live within the 1st District: Nancy Goroff lives in Stony Brook; John Avlon lives in Sag Harbor.
Nancy Goroff ran for the congressional seat in 2020 and lost to Republican Lee Zeldin. She is a scientist, and she has the endorsement of EMILY’s List.
John Avlon is an American journalist and a political commentator (CNN, The Daily Beast ). He has garnered the endorsements of many past and present Democratic Party leaders, including Jay Jacobs, Fred Thiele, Bridget Fleming, Ann Welker, Jay Schneiderman and Representative Tom Souzzi.
John and Nancy have similar positions on many key issues, including combating climate change and protecting women’s rights (including reproductive rights).
The Republican incumbent did not support the bipartisan immigration legislation that would have improved the situation at the border. He is a loyal Republican who has consistently voted with his party. During his tenure, the Republican-led House of Representatives hasn’t gotten much done other than removing a Speaker, blocking bipartisan legislation and creating chaos. To say that this Republican-led House of Representatives is dysfunctional is an understatement.
I will give LaLota credit for standing up to the disgraced former Congressman George Santos; however, he is missing in action with respect to Marjorie Taylor Greene, Matt Gaetz and the rest of the extreme MAGA Republicans, including Donald Trump, who was unanimously convicted on all 34 counts on May 31 and is now a felon.
It is critical for our country to have a functional Congress to do the work of the people. Sadly, the current Republican House has been unable to govern. As such, we need to get Democratic control of the House.
Nancy Goroff had her chance in 2020, but she lost by a wide margin.
I urge you to give John Avlon the chance to go up against the incumbent Republican. I think that Avlon has the background, the intellect and the communication skills to win. He is a middle-of-the-road, common sense pragmatist. Avlon is the kind of candidate who will appeal to a broad swath of voters, including independent swing voters.
Vote for John Avlon on June 25 in the Democratic primary. He has the best chance to defeat Republican LaLota in November.
Please note that early voting is available at selected locations from June 15 through 23. Consult the Suffolk County Board of Elections for details.
