The Best Shot

I recently had the pleasure of visiting my old stomping ground in Flanders to attend the Flanders Riverside Northampton Community Association’s meet the candidates event. I was so excited to hear Maria Moore speak about her accomplishments as mayor of Westhampton Beach and am now more convinced that she’s the right woman for the job.

Back in 2015, the Town Board approved an overlay zoning district that would see the redevelopment of the most economically disadvantaged hamlet on all of Long Island — Riverside. This revitalization has been stalled for almost a decade, waiting for a sewer district, and lacking the political will to see it built.

The landscape in Riverside is different. The residents want it. They want it really bad. The business owners are excited about the new possibilities that the form-based code allows for their property. The developers are ready to make the investment. Southampton needs the mixed-use housing units that would be built.

Maria has the experience to bring all of this to life.

Maria Moore, as evidenced by her extensive and impressive resume, is the supervisor we need to finally get this revitalization done. No single issue in Flanders and Riverside has garnered as much support at a public hearing as the revitalization of Riverside. At the time, we had to get the Town Board to move their public hearing to the elementary school to accommodate the crowds of supporters excited to speak at the microphone and voice their support. That hasn’t changed in the past eight years. Residents haven’t given up and are as passionate as ever to see it built.

I’m convinced that having Maria on the ballot, and winning this race, is the best shot Riverside has of ushering in an already approved new and innovative overlay district.

I’ll be voting for Maria Moore on November 7, and I hope you will too.
