In the 20-plus years that I have lived full time in Southampton, I can think of no more important congressional election than the one coming up on November 8. Bridget Fleming, former town councilwoman and current Suffolk County legislator, is the Democratic candidate.

As a member of the town’s Sustainability Advisory Committee since 2008, I have worked with Bridget on many occasions. We have her to thank for the deciding vote to prohibit single-use plastic checkout bags in Southampton, which has kept millions of plastic bags out of the environment and helped make Southampton an environmental leader in New York State.

She asks the right questions and takes the legislative initiative when it is important to do so. Her experience, intelligence and integrity make her an outstanding person to represent us in Congress.
