The Right To Disagree

In Letters to the Editor published on December 24, there are some comments that can only be considered deeply disturbing and troubling to freedom of speech in the United States, including a letter that likens President Trump and his voters to Nazi Germany. Truly disgusting.

Another example is the letter from a former judge, Peter Mayer [“An Indelible Stain”], in which he denigrates the American right to disagree with the most recent presidential election, making it seem improper and disgraceful to challenge those results, which is well within our rights to do. He claims that Congressman Zeldin has no basis for challenging the troubling election results for president, and that the act by the congressman is not American.

That is deeply troubling, especially since, in his long-winded comments, he does not address the real issue of states needing to go through their legislatures to change voting standards in state elections. It’s not up to the governor or some other state official to make those changes. That is what the president and his team have been trying to address. The judge never mentions this “minor” detail.

As far as disenfranchising millions of voters, another claim made by the judge, then perhaps look no further than the millions who voted for Trump and feel cheated.

The judge’s argument is faulty and never addresses the real issue. The recent election was filled with problems, including states making last-minute changes to voting protocol without proper legislation. That is the real crime. There was a congressional hearing two weeks ago, and some of these items were addressed. The judge seems to be stating to Trump voters, “Just shut up and go away.”

It’s for the best that this judge is no longer sitting on the bench, since he believes that his opinion is right and Republicans are wrong in exercising their American right to disagree. His comments are reminiscent in what I would expect to come out of Mother Russia or Red China.

Extremely disappointing in that this is a former judge. He affected people’s lives and made major decisions while harboring this type of inner beliefs.

I am sorry, Judge, but you are dead wrong on this one. Bravo, Congressman Zeldin.
