Theodore E. Squires
Theodore E. Squires of Water Mill died on Sunday, September 2, at Southampton Hospital. He was 84.
Mr. Squires was born on May 15, 1928, at Southampton Hospital, the son of Theodore F. and Miriam T. Squires. He graduated from Southampton High School in 1946 and immediately enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving in occupied Japan. After his discharge, he enrolled at Syracuse University, receiving a master’s degree in education. Following graduation from Syracuse, he accepted a job teaching high school history in Hudson, New York.
Upon returning to the East End, he worked for various employers including Ed Winters’s commercial fishing boat, John Betty’s service station, and Squires and Holden Surveyors.
In 1956, Mr. Squires and Tom Phillips began operating the Esso service station on Hampton Road in Southampton. The partners moved across the street to the Mobil station in 1962, which later became the Olde Town Mobile Service Station. Mr. Squires was the sole owner and operator of the Olde Town Mobil Service Station for 46 years.
He was a lifetime member of the First Presbyterian Church of Southampton and served on the Board of Deacons, Session, and Trustees for 35 years. In addition, he served on the Southampton Cemetery Board. He served on the Southampton Board of Education for two and a half terms, and served as board president from 1986 to 1987.
Mr. Squires was a passionate bridge player and an avid reader. He had a lifelong love of the outdoors, constantly awaiting the next fishing trip.
He is survived by his wife, Marjorie (née Stumme) of 49 years; daughter, Teal Squires Vella and her husband Stephen of Water Mill; two sons, Theodore E. Squires Jr. and his wife Kirsten, and William H. Squires, all of Water Mill; and four grandchildren, Timothy and Molly Squires, and Kyle and Nathaniel Vella. He is also survived by a sister, Patricia Rishel and her husband Earl of Water Mill; and many close nieces, nephews, and cousins.
The family received visitors on Wednesday, September 5, at the Brockett Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, September 6, at 10 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church of Southampton with interment at the Water Mill Cemetery.
