Thomas Patton Knapp II

Thomas Patton Knapp II, formerly of Remsenburg, died at Visiting Nurse Association Hospice House in Florida on Sunday, July 24. He was 90.

Born in Blue Point, he lived in Vero Beach, Florida, for 33 years after moving from Remsenburg. He served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy during World War II, and earned his undergraduate degree from Princeton University and his master’s degree from Columbia University. He was a stock analyst and partner with the investment firm, Tweedy, Browne Company from 1957 to 1986.

Mr. Knapp was a member of The Sayville Yacht Club, Princeton Club in Manhattan, Quantuck Beach Club in Westhampton Beach, the Westhampton Yacht Club, John’s Island Club, Grand Harbor Club, Moorings Club and Quail River Club.

He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Virginia M. Knapp of Vero Beach and Remsenburg; children, Gideon Knapp and his wife Sherry, Jonathan Knapp and his wife Debbie, and Shepard Knapp, all of Florida, David Schmitt of Colorado, Jane Whelhan and her husband Christopher of the U.K., Jessie Knapp Mendelsohn and her husband Mark of Florida, Margie Knapp of Florida; stepsons, Russell and his wife Christine Weisenbacher of Manorville, and Justin Weisenbacher of Florida; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A private burial was held at John’s Island Cemetery on Tuesday, July 26. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Strunk Funeral Home and Crematory in Vero Beach.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The Humanists of The Treasure Coast, 1550 North East Ocean Boulevard, Suite F301, Stuart, FL 34996; or VNA Hospice, 1110 35th Lane, Vero Beach, FL 32960.
