Three not-so-little pigs that were on their way to the Evelyn Alexander Wildlife Rescue Center in Hampton Bays on Friday had other plans.

The three pigs were rescued by Suffolk County Police on the side of Sunrise Highway after escaping a trailer they were being transported in.

Shortly after 11 a.m. on Friday, between Bohemia and Sayville, Sergeant Theodore Martinez was driving east on Sunrise Highway and noticed what he thought was a pig on the side of the road. He then discovered a Hummer traveling on the highway with an open trailer containing another pig.

The officer pulled the vehicle over, and the operator said she was transporting four pigs to an animal rescue center and was unaware that three pigs had escaped, according to police.

Sergeant Peter Hansen and 5th Precinct Officers Michael Sheehan, Brian Drew, John Jantzen, Patrick O’Callaghan and Alison Hall all responded to the scene, in addition to Sayville Animal Hospital employees and employees of the Town of Islip.

All three pigs were found in different locations along the highway, and none appeared to be injured. All four were taken to their original travel destination, the Evelyn Alexander Wildlife Rescue Center in Hampton Bays.

Amanda Daily, office manager at the wildlife center, said the pigs were at the center very briefly, getting checkups before being transported to their new permanent home.

“They only had superficial wounds from the fall off the trailer,” Ms. Daily said. “They’re a co-worker’s pets, and she’s moving, so they are on their way to their new home.”
