Tiger Gardiner of Eastport died on September 6 at home with loved ones. She was 87.

She was born Caryl Mary Beer on May 11, 1938, in Brooklyn, the granddaughter of Norma May (Squires) Beer, and a seventh generation of the Squires family of Good Ground, now Hampton Bays.

At the age of 6, the family moved to Bronxville, New York, where she lived until graduating from high school. She was a legal secretary for 42 years, serving as administrative assistant to the legal unit of the House Select Committee on Assassinations in 1978 after which she worked for the prominent law firm of Kirkland & Ellis in Washington, D.C., until retiring at age 62 to pursue her lifelong passion of researching the Squires’ family of Hampton Bays (previously Good Ground.)

In 1983, she legally changed her name to Tiger Gardine. After retirement, she moved to Eastport to continue her Squires research. She was the author of “The Gardiner-Squires Connection’ and ‘The South Fork Squires.”

She was a member of the Suffolk County Historical Society and Charter Member No. 6 and lifetime member of the Hampton Bays Historical and Preservation Society and the Raynor Family Association.

She also enjoyed photography and during the summer sold her photographs under the name “PHOTIGERPHY by Tiger Gardiner.”

Visitation will be at Werner-Rothwell Funeral Home on Saturday, September 13, from 9-11 a.m. Interment will follow at Good Ground Cemetery in Hampton Bays.

In lieu of flowers, donations to East End Hospice (eeh.org) or to a cancer organization of one’s choosing, would be appreciated by the family.

Does the New York City Mayor’s Race Matter Here?

2025 is what political pundits call an “off-year” election: There is no election for president or governor. It is the most local of the four-year election cycle, with only local town and county races on the ballot. Yet, just 100 miles to our west is a high-profile election to choose the next mayor of New York. It has drawn national attention since an unknown state assemblyman turned the political world upside down by winning the Democratic primary. His name is Zohran Mamdani. Why was this a political earthquake? Well, first of all, he is an avowed Democratic Socialist who, just ... by FRED THIELE

A Real Leader

A recent story [“Divided Southampton Town Board Approves Funding for Affordable Housing on Quiogue,” 27east.com, August 27] relates the Town Board’s discussion leading to a 3-2 vote to award $2.7 million in Community Housing Fund money for a 79-unit workforce housing project on Quiogue. An editorial in the same issue [“Stop Stalling,” September 4] reviews the South Fork’s admitted crisis in affordable housing and concludes that Southampton’s Town Board is “stuck in first gear” about the much-needed acceleration of the approval process. The editorial refers specifically to the recent $2.7 million award for the Quiogue development, in which Supervisor Maria ... by Staff Writer

No Justification

I must say, my stomach turned as I read the antisemitic diatribe Richard Smith submitted [“A War Crime,” Letters, September 4] about heinous acts apparently committed by the surrounded, out-gunned, out-manned Jewish forces defending themselves after the State of Israel was created by the United Nations in 1948. Since he made the accusations, he should have to do more than simply state them as fact. I find their very utterance a thinly veiled attempt at creating a justification for Arab atrocities in Israel and, frankly, against the non-Muslim West. It is stunning how confident this anti-Israel voice has become on ... by Staff Writer

A Safe Place?

Months ago, The Southampton Press published my suggestion that Southampton’s judicial candidates declare their position on the president’s pardon of the January 6 rioters as a measure of whether it was a safe place for me, a Democrat. Today, I can only imagine the Suffolk County Republican chairman after they promoted someone who bucked Donald Trump. But the fact of the matter is that when J.D. Vance makes so many public statements asserting that the executive branch can and should defy judicial orders that he considers illegitimate, judges have to be bristling. Heroic Response

On behalf of the Quogue Sinclair family, we extend our deepest appreciation to the Hampton Bays Fire Department and the ambulance volunteers, as well as surrounding departments, for their swift and heroic response on Wednesday evening. Your dedication and professionalism in containing the fire and ensuring safety are truly commendable. We are incredibly fortunate to have such a skilled team of first responders. Your commitment to training and preparedness was evident, and we are relieved that the outcome was not more severe. Please convey our heartfelt thanks to all who attended the scene. Your bravery and expertise are a shining ... by Staff Writer

Pay To Play

This week, I’m commenting on the campaign finances of Southampton Village Mayor Bill Manger, Trustee Roy Stevenson and Trustee Len Zinnanti. Residents deserve to know who’s really bankrolling these men. Spoiler alert: It’s not your local business owners on Main Street. The donor list reads like a who’s who of Wall Street elites. There’s billionaire Leon Black, former CEO of Apollo; billionaire John Paulson, who became famous (or infamous) for betting against the U.S. housing market; hedge fund executive Thomas Kempner, now comfortably parked on the Zoning Board of Appeals; Mark McIntire, not a hedge fund titan but conveniently installed ... by Staff Writer

Professional Office

Thanks to the Southampton Town Democratic Committee for helping voters see clearly, in this upcoming November election, that the only truly qualified candidate for Southampton Town clerk is Sundy Schermeyer. The Democrats’ current candidate Mark Bernardo’s background is in the entertainment industry: ABC, CBS News and Sports — hardly credentials for town clerk. To add more details from Bernardo’s bio, he is a volunteer usher and volunteer bartender at the Westhampton Beach Performing Arts Center. Could these qualifications seal the deal? I doubt it. Now, back to the real deal, current Southampton Town Clerk Sundy Schermeyer. As stated on the ... by Staff Writer

Let's Discuss

We are writing to request a meeting to discuss pedestrian and vehicular safety issues that exist at the intersection of Long Beach Road (County Road 60) and Noyac Road in Noyac. We have observed several ongoing issues that we believe warrant collaborative discussion toward a permanent solution. Although these critical issues worsen in the summer season, we have observed that they have grown more acute all year round. Our concerns at the Noyac Road/Long Beach Road intersection include: • Alleviating speeding traffic in both directions on Noyac Road. We have observed that the new stop sign has had mixed results ... by Staff Writer

On the Menu

As autumn approaches, the days grow cooler and light fades earlier, and Americans think of falling leaves and hearty stews. Here, for the culinary-minded, is a recipe for this fall — or our fall, as it were. POT AU FEW: Take large cut of amply larded rotted meat, preferably Trump steak. Marinate in a curdled brine of egotism, ignorance and arrogance for another six months. Add potpourri of spices culled from: marrow of lackeys, worshiper sweat, drippings of factotums, perfume of Mar-a-Lago clones, corruption seeds, essence of fulsome interns, Netanyahu nettle, and leaves of Putin and Kim Jong-un (available online). ... by Staff Writer
