In regard to the Southampton Fire District commissioners’ proposal to construct a fire house on Upper Seven Ponds Road in Water Mill: It is hard to imagine that the motivation for this structure can be exclusively based on community safety.
With the cumbersome, nearly impossible access to the highway, the small number of volunteers who currently live near the proposed location, the prohibitive weight restriction of the bridge at Head of Pond Road, the railroad crossing, the infamous traffic on Old Mill Road, the school bus depot, the proximity to wetlands, and various other obvious barriers to response time, I fail to see any justification for proceeding with such an extensive plan in a residential location where the devastation to the community would far outweigh any realistic benefit.
