Too Much At Stake

How quickly we dispose of people in public life.

Two weeks ago, I wrote a Letter to the Editor about Governor Andrew Cuomo’s problems with nursing home statistics [“Like A Leader,” Letters, February 25]. Now he appears to have done some insensitive things. Do these actions disqualify him as a governor?

In our current world, politics is a game; I guess it always has been. These two matters will be investigated. No one should judge him before the findings.

When will life go back to the way it should be? You’re innocent until the court says you’re guilty. Today, public opinion rules, and the media pushes that. One can trick the press into being used as a weapon to destroy, and that is why some have lost their credibility.

Let us talk about the facts. The governor runs a demanding office. He has made many enemies over his tenure. He is the smartest one in the room, but my instinct tells me he listens. I’m sure men and women have felt his wrath.

A wedding picture should be merely that — a memory in the newlyweds’ album. A backless dress and a politician’s hug, or even a kiss, is as normal as eating ethnic food on the campaign trail.

It used to be the work that mattered.

We should let him get on with governing during this pandemic, but now another group stands up, and the wrath of women is deadly. It is evident to anyone that both political parties want him out. We cannot let this happen. How many leaders could have effectively led us during this past year? How many leaders could have gained respect from the whole world while putting constant restrictions on our daily life?

No one wants young women mistreated. I have two daughters and three granddaughters — I don’t want them to be harassed in the workplace. When my daughters were young, I taught them how to walk on the streets of New York City. While I was across the street, l watched to tell them whether they were walking with authority and strength. I know New York is a real tough place. The women who have lodged complaints should be respected for their courage.

Yet even they should wait for an independent investigation. Let others evaluate this.

In my life, I have been wrong many times in judging other people’s motives. There’s too much at stake to be wrong about this one.
