Replacement of the track and turf field at Westhampton Beach High School is underway.
Work comes on the heels of a voter-approved $33 million bond last October — $2.9 million of which will cover removal and reconstruction of the bleachers, press box and field house, while $1.4 million pays for turf and track replacements. The lining of the field, new goal posts and soccer nets is also included in the renovation cost.
Superintendent Dr. Carolyn Probst said during a June 26 Board of Education meeting that the area will remain fenced off until this first of many projects is completed.
“Once the construction starts, the community is asked to stay off the track and turf for the entire summer,” Probst said. “That’s so the contractors can work to have the project completed by the fall.”
The district, she said, is also asking that use of the grass fields this summer be limited to high school teams so that those fields can continue to be in a usable condition through the fall season.
“Stay tuned for some exciting progress,” Probst said. “We look forward to a great opening season with the new turf and track when we come back in September.”
