I noticed in The Southampton Press a few weeks ago an article by Cailin Riley that Southampton Village has been recognized as a “Tree City” [“Southampton Village Officially Becomes a ‘Tree City,’” 27east.com, March 1]. This designation was granted through a program titled Tree City USA, run by the Arbor Day Foundation.
There are four requirements that must be met to earn the status: The village must maintain a tree board department (no mention of the size, and we already have Alison Bond’s and Adrienne Harris’s tree committee); have a community tree ordinance (on the agenda of the Village Board meeting on April 11); spend $2 per capita on urban forestry (no comments); and celebrate Arbor Day (usually on the last Friday in April; this year, April 28).
It took Southampton a year to accomplish the task.
Isn’t it time for Sag Harbor, with grassroots support, to initiate such a designation?
Thank you for your consideration.
