Joseph A. McLoughlin Sr.’s letter in The Southampton Press [“Avoid the Jam,” Letters, May 23] has misleading misinformation regarding the “truck route,” which he claims was implemented by the current Board of Trustees. It was not.
In fact, it is Section 110-16.1 of village code, amended on January 21, 2003. This was actually done when Mr. McLoughlin Sr. was a trustee.
According to the Southampton Village Police Department: The only recent changes were made to signage on roads that prohibited trucks of more than 10,000 gross vehicle weight rating. The code was updated to comply with state law, and the current verbiage was added to signs that were installed. Signage was lacking, and therefore it was hard to enforce properly. In addition, we have added signage where trucks are prohibited.
This administration is limiting trucks rather than the other way around.
Mr. McLoughlin’s letter states that you should not vote for the trustees who voted for this “truck route.”
The current trustees, including Gina Arresta and Len Zinnanti, had nothing to do with a designated “truck route” — but they had everything to do with increasing limitations for trucks in the village, including White Street and Flying Point Road.
