Try a Carpool

I worked in Upper Manhattan and lived in Yonkers during a subway strike. My company, and others like it, put up bulletin boards where people wrote where they lived, what time they had to get in to work, and when they normally left. This effort was very successful and led to many carpools enabling people to get to work and reduced the car traffic going into Manhattan.

Bulletin boards are a thing of the past, but I’m sure someone can develop an app that would link people from the western part of the East End who work in the eastern part of the East End.

For example, if I lived in Center Moriches and had to be at Stony Brook Southampton Hospital or Springs School and had to be at work by 8 a.m., I could carpool with someone who lived in Islip and worked at Southampton High School, or at Stop & Shop in East Hampton, who also had to be at work at 8 a.m. Going home also could be worked out, possibly with different drivers.

While this is not the solution to the larger problem, it can make a dent in single-driver cars. It can also save money for all the passengers and drivers — and you can make new friends, too.
