By now, it’s common knowledge that the U.S. Coast Guard housing site in Westhampton will be auctioned soon [“On the Block Again: Auction of Vacant Coast Guard Housing in Westhampton Set for August,” 27east.com, July 19]. The Hampton West Estates Residents Association is very concerned that the outcome of this sale will directly affect the integrity of our community, since we are directly adjacent to the Coast Guard property.
Our community has worked tirelessly over the years to create a stable and attractive neighborhood, and we are proud of our accomplishments. Therefore, it is with deep regret that we report that the Town of Southampton has never recognized the significance of the sale of the Coast Guard site on our neighborhood and, further, has never informed us of specific plans should the town acquire the site.
Thankfully, The Southampton Press alerted us to the town’s interest in purchasing the USCG property in the August 12, 2021, edition of the paper. In the article “Bak: New Housing Director Wants To Enable Employees to Live Where They Work,” Director Kara Bak stated, “The vision is to create affordable homes, each containing affordable accessory apartments, for rent.”
This may be Director Bak’s vision, but it isn’t ours — it is no wonder that the town’s plans were held under lock and key.
Southampton Town, we are alive and kicking. It’s time to take our views into account.
