Understanding Autism

Approximately 25 first responders — representing police, fire and ambulance departments from across the East End and farther west, plus other interested individuals — turned out on Saturday, April 22, for the annual training seminar offered by the Flying Point Foundation for Autism.

Featuring a presentation by Thomas Buckley from the Autism and Law Enforcement Education Coalition in Massachusetts, the seminar provides important insight into myriad variables that could arise in an emergency that involves an individual with autism.

We are grateful to all those who attended the event and, in doing so, have taken one more step toward making ours a safer community and one that has a greater understanding of autism.

To further these goals, the Flying Point Foundation for Autism has recently distributed FPF “GoBags” to a number of emergency agencies on the East End. The bags contain items that may prove to be helpful when a person with autism is involved in an emergency situation. Any agency that has not yet received bags is welcome to contact us and we will provide them at no cost.

As Autism Awareness Month comes to a close, we hope that everyone in our community continues their commitment to understanding those who may be different from them and might need some extra support to live their lives to the fullest.
