It’s been a bit of an up and down start to the season for the South Fork boys lacrosse team.
After losing their season opener, 16-11, at home to Eastport-South Manor on March 23, the Islanders responded the very next day with a 19-0 nonleague victory at home over the Stony Brook School.
Then, after defeating host Walt Whitman, 8-7, on March 28, South Fork lost, 13-10, at home this past Friday to have a 2-2 overall record.
South Fork head coach Matt Babb didn’t put too much stock in his team’s nonleague games to start the season, but he was proud of the victory over Whitman, which was ranked 13th coming into the season.
“It wasn’t our best game, but we fought to the end to earn that victory,” he said. “Our midfield took over as Jack Cooper and Charlie Corwin put the team on their backs and led the way down the stretch.”
Cooper and Corwin, a pair of juniors from East Hampton, scored five of the Islanders eight goals in the win over Whitman, with Corwin getting the hat trick. Cooper Ceva, an East Hampton senior, made eight saves in goal.
Babb felt that his team could have beaten Commack, which was ranked sixth in Division I heading into the season. To the Islanders credit, they faced a 10-4 deficit heading into the fourth quarter, where they outscored Commack, 6-3.
Cooper had the hat trick in that game while East Hampton senior J.P. Amaden had two goals and two assists.
“We made a few too many mistakes that put us in a hole,” Babb said. “We view it as we didn’t lose, but rather just ran out of time as we were making a charge late. The game did show us that we are capable of competing with some of these top-ranked teams, though.
“We are looking forward to getting back on track this week,” he added.
Hampton Bays junior Isaiah Lattanzio had three goals and an assist and Corwin and Pierson sophomore Slate Glick each scored three goals to lead South Fork in its lopsided victory over Stony Brook. Hampton Bays freshman Luca Lattanzio added two goals and two assists and Cooper had two goals and an assist. Cooper scored five goals and added an assist in the loss to ESM.
South Fork played Riverhead at Hampton Bays High School on Tuesday and then has over a week off until its next game on Wednesday, April 12, at Bay Shore at 10 a.m.
