Update Saturday, 10:30 a.m.

The air quality forecast for the East End is for Saturday is “Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups,” though the forecast for Sunday and Monday is “Moderate.”

Not only is the level of particulate matter in the air in elevated due to wildfire smoke coming from Canada, but ozone levels are also above normal.

As of Saturday morning, the particulate count was in the “Moderate” range and the ozone level was in the “Good” range, but the forecast for the whole day anticipates particulates will reach “Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups” and the ozone level will reach “Moderate” over the course of the day.

When the air quality index falls into the “Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups” category, people with heart or lung disease, older adults, children and teens should choose less strenuous activities or shorten then amount of time spent outdoors. Everyone else may enjoy outdoor activities, according to AirNow.gov.

The Downtown Dilemma

Last week, an Express Sessions event in Sag Harbor focused on the village’s shopping district and explored a puzzle: If last summer was the busiest ever, and the streets of Sag Harbor were, by all accounts, packed on most every day and evening, why were the owners of shops on Main Street and elsewhere in the business district reporting a down year? The answers are elusive, complicated — and, in many ways, universal to every downtown shopping district on the South Fork, from Montauk to Eastport: Southampton, Bridgehampton, East Quogue, Westhampton Beach, Water Mill, Amagansett, East Hampton, Quogue, Hampton Bays. ... by Editorial Board
