The 101-year-old Bridgehampton resident was honored in a special ceremony at the New York Weather Forecast Office at Brookhaven National Laboratory, where he was given an 80-year service award—a new award, since he’s the first winner, and one named for him, the longest-serving volunteer the National Weather Service has ever had.

Services for Mr. Hendrickson will take place Friday, January 22 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at Brockett Funeral Home on Hampton Road in Southampton Village.
The funeral service will take place the next day—Saturday, January 23—at 11 a.m. at the Bridgehampton Presbyterian Church on Montauk Highway in Bridgehampton, with a burial to follow at the Edgewood Cemetery on Edgewood Avenue, also in Bridgehampton.
Richard Hendrickson, a Bridgehampton resident who has been observing the weather on the East End for more than 80 years, has died at the age of 103. He died January 9 at the Westhampton Care Center.
For 84 years, Mr. Hendrickson has been taking weather observations numerous times a day as part of the U.S. Weather Service’s Cooperative Observer Program, founded in 1890 as a way to train people to be volunteers. He was recently honored for his decades of service.
Mr. Hendrickson grew up as an east end farmer and prided himself on being self-sufficient—he even built his Lumber Lane home himself. In an interview with The Press just before his 100th birthday he reminisced about how the majority of his neighbors had large gardens and would trade items back and forth.
Mr. Hendrickson was also a published historian and one of the original members of the Bridgehampton Historical Society. He was honored in 2009, at age 97, for his dedication to the society.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Brockett Funeral Home in Southampton; details will be posted when available.
