Pat Turchiano, a senior clerk typist in Southampton Town’s Department of Land Management, Environmental Division, is the winner of the $1 million Powerball, according to the buzz in Town Hall.
Ms. Turchiano has not returned to work since claiming her winning ticket on Thursday, town employees said.
“I think she’s going through shock right now,” said her attorney, Mike Sendlenski, who is also an attorney for the town. Without naming his client, he said she declined to comment at this time.
Ms. Jannsen at Southampton Stationery also did not name Ms. Turchiano, but said on Thursday, “She’s just a customer who comes in every so often” and that she introduced herself when claiming her ticket.
The New York Lottery declined to confirm the winner’s name until an official press event to be held in two to four weeks. By Thursday afternoon, the winner came forward to the commission to claim the ticket.
Ms. Turchiano was appointed to her current post in 2008 after having been a clerk typist for the town since 2003.

A local woman claimed $1 million in Powerball winnings at Southampton Stationery in Southampton Village on Thursday morning, according to store officials.
“She deserves it,” said Rosemary Jannsen, the wife of Herb Jannsen, the owner of the Hampton Road store. Ms. Jannsen declined to identify the winner without her permission, other than to say that she was a local woman.
The winner bought her ticket on Wednesday and came in on at about 8:30 or 9 a.m. Thursday with her attorney to claim her winnings, Ms. Jannsen said.
According to Christy Calicchia, a spokeswoman for New York Lottery, the winner has not yet come forward to the lottery commission to claim the Quick Pick ticket, for which the numbers were randomly generated at the store.
“We’re all excited,” Ms. Jannsen said, adding that the winner was also excited, as well as a little nervous.
The Powerball drawing saw three second-place winners from New York State in Wednesday’s drawing, each taking home a $1 million prize. The others were from Massapequa and Brooklyn.
No one won the jackpot, however. The next drawing is Saturday for a grand prize of $475 million.
Southampton Stationery, which Ms. Jannsen said has had lottery winners in the past, will receive signs broadcasting its winning ticket to display in its windows soon.
