Neighbors in Support of Immigrants is holding its third annual Bike Recycling event on Sunday, May 19, from noon to 2 p.m. in which donated bikes are given to teens who are in need of a mode of transportation to get to summer and after school jobs. In advance of the event, the group is seeking donations of bicycles is good condition. Last year, the demand for bicycles far exceeded the number of bikes available. Those who have a bicycle to donate should email supportimmigrants@gmail.com. The Bike Recycling event will take place at Red Creek Park in Hampton Bays.
Neighbors in Support of Immigrants is a volunteer group based primarily in the Hampton Bays area. It is “committed to the ethos that all people share a common humanity.” For the last sixteen years, the group has worked with community leaders to provide needed services to immigrants.
In addition to the Bike Recycling, NISI raises money during the holiday season to offer gift cards to farm workers on the East End. It works closely with Southampton Town and Hampton Bays Elementary School to offer scholarships to families whose children would benefit from the after school programs that the school provides but families cannot afford.
Those who wish to make a monetary donation may send a check to Box 223, Hampton Bays, NY 11946.
