Valerie Jean Poyner Sadler of Virginia Beach, Virginia, formerly of Southampton, died on December 30 of cancer. She was 84.
Born October 17, 1931, in Southampton, she graduated from Southampton High School in 1949, and soon thereafter moved to Fishers Island, New York, prior to settling in the Tidewater region of Virginia.
She enjoyed numerous crafts, including silk-flower arranging, pencil sketches, gardening and, even into her 80s, driving her Jeep Cherokee to visit friends and small business merchants she had come to know over the last decade of her life.
She is survived by a sister, Cherie Tambollio, of Massachusetts, as well as three children, Jamie Howard Sadler and wife Tanya of California, Mark Leslie Sadler and wife Betsy of Illinois, and Laura Ruth Sadler of Virginia; eight grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, two nephews, three grand-nephews and two great-grand-nieces. Born a second child to Willard Earl Poyner and Nellian Youde Poyner, she is predeceased by her parents; a brother, Willard Winton Poyner, and a nephew, Mark Hopkins.
Visitation and a memorial service will be held on January 20 at 11 a.m. at the Brockett Funeral Home in Southampton. Burial will be at Southampton Cemetery, alongside her parents and brother.
