Ageism is defined as “prejudice or discrimination on the grounds of a person’s age.” In some cultures, elders are revered for their wisdom and knowledge. Lately, it seems that some in Hampton Bays who profess civility and inclusion can’t hide their prejudice against “senior citizens,” as if once you reach a certain age your opinion and voice carry less weight than others.
There are over 4,400 residents in Hampton Bays who are 60 years of age and older, representing more than 30 percent of the adult population in Hampton Bays, based on the most recent U.S. Census.
Senior citizens help fuel the local economic engine. According to Buxton Consumer Intelligence, Baby Boomers hold 70 percent of the disposable income in the U.S. and spend more than any other generation, across all categories.
Senior citizens who own property in Hampton Bays help fund the Hampton Bays School District and help to educate the future generations in Hampton Bays. School taxes account for almost 75 percent of the property tax bill in Hampton Bays. It is estimated that it costs over $25,000 per year to educate each student in the Hampton Bays School District.
Many of the senior citizens are veterans, professionals, caring parents and grandparents who have gained knowledge and wisdom over the years. Many “senior citizens” are the volunteers who work at the local food pantries, animal shelters, homeless outreach, ministries at local houses of worship and actively participate in civic engagement.
They have no ulterior motive and aren’t looking to elevate their visibility in the community for financial or political gain. Many just want to share their time, talents and treasures with others. Many want to protect the beauty and natural resources of Hampton Bays for current and future generations.
So, before people start disparaging senior citizens, let’s think about what they do for our community and listen to what they have to say. All generations have value and we all need to work toward the betterment and preservation of Hampton Bays for current and future generations.
