Victoria Ruth Skeris of Remsenburg died on July 2. She was 62.

Skeris was born July 9, 1959 in Lynbrook, and died July 2 in Nesconset. She was the first child born to Carl Robert Skeris and Margaret Frances Skeris. She moved with her family to Remsenburg in 1970, where she enjoyed the beach, sailing and music.

After a drowning accident at age 16, Skeris was left with a permanent disability, but was still able to graduate from Westhampton Beach High School in 1978. She was a lover of music, and despite her accident, she never forgot the lyrics to her favorite classic songs of the 1970s. She was quick to smile and laugh, and brought joy to those she encountered, her family said, noting that she loved her family and enjoyed every moment she spent with them.

She is survived by her parents, as well as four siblings, Russell Skeris (Fran), Ginny Kunik (Bob), Karen Davis (Jack), and Jeff Skeris (Molly); six nieces; two nephews; and one great-niece.

Viewing will be held on Friday, July 8, at Werner-Rothwell Funeral home, 80 Mill Road, Westhampton Beach, from 1-3 p.m. and 5-7 p.m. Private interment to follow.

In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate any donations be made to Rise Life Services, 901 East Main Street, Suite 508, Riverhead, NY 11901 (riselifeservices.org).

AI and Writer’s Detour

I heard an English professor extolling the virtue of artificial intelligence and how his students could use it to overcome a condition he called writer’s block. AI could script that first sentence for them. He rejoiced — that elusive, frustrating first sentence is no longer the stopper on the ink bottle. Should it be funny or impactful? It must be original. Good luck. Before AI, there were other ways of coping with WB. The most successful strategy being struggling through: keep looking, keep scribbling. Getting up and going for a short walk is still the healthiest choice. And smoking, though ... by Marilee Foster
