Victoria Wesnofske of Bridgehampton died peacefully at home on October 13th due to heart disease and lung cancer. She was 88.
Born in Southampton in 1934, she was the daughter of Jennie (Jean) and Seymour Sadowski and one of three children. The family lived in Brooklyn for a brief time during WWII while her parents were employed as defense workers at the Brooklyn Naval Yard. After the war the family moved back to Southampton.
A 1952 graduate of Southampton High School, she enrolled in the Roosevelt Hospital School of Nursing in New York City and became a registered nurse in 1955. She worked as an operating room nurse at Southampton Hospital for several years before leaving to raise her family. In 1959 she married Clyde Wesnofske, a potato farmer from Bridgehampton. When her children grew old enough to attend school, she took over the administrative duties for the family farm from her mother-in-law and continued until she handed those duties over to her daughter in 2001.
Her greatest passion was her family. A devoted wife and mother, she supported her husband and sons for decades by bringing lunch to the field every day of planting season, including this past spring, so they could work without stopping. She adored her twelve grandchildren and was proud of each one. She loved supporting them in any and all activities in which they participated. Whether sports, ballet performances, school plays or academic ceremonies, she was always present; often seen bundled up in her chair on the sidelines during early spring and late fall games, and in the ice-hockey arena. Her home was continually open to family and friends, especially in the summer, and many happy memories were made in the pool and playing softball during her annual 4th of July celebration. A devoted parishioner of Queen of the Most Holy Rosary Church, she regularly attended Saturday 5pm Mass with her husband Clyde and they enjoyed dinner out together afterwards.
She was very proud of her Polish heritage and enjoyed listening to her favorite polkas while driving in the car or cleaning her home. She continued her grandmother’s tradition of baking multiple loaves of Polish cinnamon bread every Easter and Christmas. This family tradition will now be lovingly carried on by the next generations. She was an avid Red Sox fan; proud to say that she babysat for Carl Yastrzemski. She also enjoyed day trips to Mohegan Sun Casino with her daughter, sister, and cousin Connie Zilnicki.
Predeceased by her parents, she is survived by her sister, Jean Donnelly of Riverhead and brother, Stanley Sadowski of Clearwater, Florida.
She is also survived by her loving husband of 63 years, Clyde; daughter Victoria Corwin, her husband Les and their children, Jonathan and Sarah; son Richard, his wife Susanne, and their children, Richard, Emily and Andrew; son John, his wife Julie and their children, Abigail and Remi; son Michael, his wife Wendy and their children, Samantha, Emma and Lucy; son Robert, his wife Rita and their children, Eric and Jessica; along with many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will take place Friday, October 21st from 5pm to 8pm, at Brockett Funeral Home, 203 Hampton Road, Southampton, New York.
A celebration of the Liturgy of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, October 22 at 9:30 am, at the Queen of the Most Holy Rosary R.C. Church, 2350 Montauk Highway, Bridgehampton, with interment at Sacred Hearts Cemetery in Southampton.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Queen of the Most Holy Rosary R.C. Church in Bridgehampton at PO Box 3035, Bridgehampton, NY 11932 or the Peconic Land Trust at www. peconiclandtrust.org.
