The Express News hosted the latest in its Express Sessions panel series, “Can Southampton Village Build on its Arts and Cultural Heritage?” on Thursday, January 12, at Union Sushi ad Steak in the village.
The panel explored how Southampton Village and its environs has long been a mecca for artists, and its identity has been built on its connection to the art world, while today, a new wave of institutions — the Southampton Arts Center, the African-American Museum, the Peter Marino Art Foundation — have sparked a new golden age of sorts. It asks the questions: Can the village still create an arts and culture infrastructure to build a healthy economy around?
Panelists included Dr. Georgette Grier-Key, from the Southampton African American Museum; Kirsten Lonnie, executive director of the Southampton Cultural Center; artist Paton Miller; Christina Strassfield, executive director of the Southampton Arts Center; and Southampton Village Mayor Jesse Warren.
