Virginia Jones

Virginia Lucille Morgan Jones of Southampton died at the Hamptons Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing in Southampton on Saturday morning July 9. She was 80.

Ms. Jones, daughter of the late Lenora J. and Herbert L. Morgan, was born in Southampton, on July 19, 1930. Known to everyone as Lucille, Ms. Jones attended Southampton Public Schools.

“Ms. Lucy,” as many of her friends called her, married Frank James Jones in the late 1940s. She had a very outgoing personality and had a way of making anyone feel comfortable and at home, survivors said.

At an early age, she joined the Community Baptist Church in Southampton. Though much of the time earlier in her life she was not in Southampton, she was always a faithful member of her church. Later when she began to work locally, she was an active member in church affairs. She was a past president of the senior choir and a member of the culinary committee, which worked tirelessly in the planning of dining activities supporting all of the special events at the church. She was a member of the pastor’s aid ministry, and also a member of the floral club.

Ms. Jones was a God-fearing woman and she loved the Community Baptist Church and working to glorify and praise the Lord, survivors said. She remained active in the church until her health failed in 2010. Outside of church, she worked in the health care service area, the culinary field, and sometimes worked as a domestic with a special flair and style of her own. She liked cooking, but she had a passion for eating out at fine restaurants.

Ms. Jones is survived by her son James Curtis Jones of Southampton; two brothers, James E. Morgan and his wife Elsa of Centereach, and Herbert K. Morgan and his wife Catherine of Pennsylvania; two grandchildren, Antonio Wilson of Southampton and Adrienne Hartwell of Wyandanch; two great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren of Wyandanch; three aunts, Ida Morgan and Doris Bundy of Virginia and Margaret Stewart of Pennsylvania; and one uncle, James Stewart and his wife Fey of Virginia; a godmother, Helen Johnson of Southampton; seven nephews, Carlton and his wife Dawn, Timothy and his wife Angie, Glenn and his wife Ann, David and his wife Asia, James Jr. and his wife Alexandra, John and his wife Jennifer, and Jeffrey and his wife Barbara; many cousins and a host of friends including, Ruth Caffee and Debby Kendrick. Ms. Jones was predeceased by her husband Frank Jones; and son, Thomas Morgan.

Visitation will take place Friday, July 15, at the Community Baptist Church in Southampton from 9 to 11 a.m. The funeral service will begin at the church at 11 a.m.; Reverend Donald E. Butler officiating. Interment will follow at Southampton Cemetery. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Brockett Funeral Home in Southampton.

The Final Step

As Southampton Town considers aggressive action on sand mines, with plans to use amortization — a tool last used effectively to rid the town of nightclubs and bars the town considered nuisances — to finally end the practice, it’s important to cut through the rhetoric and state some facts. Sand mines serve a clear purpose and have economic value in a region where construction is a primary driver. But the town quite simply does not allow sand mining — that decision was made years ago, and what mines exist today are preexisting and nonconforming. Amortizing the properties is the last ... 11 Dec 2024 by Editorial Board

Keep Talking

Talk is not a solution, but solutions won’t be found without a great deal of interplay between the officials making the decisions and the public that will be affected by them. So The Express Sessions event last week in Sag Harbor, which focused on the village’s parking woes, was, along with future public hearings before the Village Board, necessary for there to be any traction on the subject. In fact, one clear message at Thursday’s session, delivered by those in attendance: Communication is absolutely crucial. And it has been one area where the village can improve. Great Buys

It’s not every day that an opportunity comes along to buy a castle. But that’s exactly where Southampton Town officials found themselves this week. Using $4 million in proceeds from the Community Preservation Fund, the Town Board agreed to buy the Casa Basso property in Westhampton — which contains a restaurant and a 120-year-old diminutive reproduction of a Spanish castle. The town plans to create a waterfront park on the newly preserved property. And not only did the town buy a castle, in a separate transaction it also agreed to buy 25 acres in East Quogue — 10 acres of ... by Editorial Board

Expanded Retirement Benefits Legislation Could Help Address Shortages for Paid EMS Staff

New legislation introduced by State Senator Monica Martinez will soon give paid first responders in Suffolk County the option to retire after 25 years of service, an enticement that could help address staffing shortages and boost recruitment of paid EMS workers. Service districts will be able to elect to include certain EMS personnel in the state pension plan. Originally approved in 2023, the plan was able to move forward thanks to a companion bill outlining a clear mechanism for fire districts to opt in. Governor Kathy Hochul’s signing of the new measure now establishes that process. “Serving your community as ... by Cailin Riley
