Vivian Marie Claud died at her Southampton home on August 23. She was 77.
Born June 26, 1936, in Drewryville, Virgina, she was the daughter of Curnel and Rosaline Turner.
The youngest of 13 children and affectionately called “Vip” by her family, she attended Southampton County Public Schools in Virginia. In 1955, she married Webster Claud. After the birth of her first two children, the young couple moved to New York and had three more children.
Locally, Ms. Claud was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church in her earlier years, serving as an usher, choir member, deaconess and missionary under the leadership of Reverend Ralph Spinner and Reverend Walsh Jackson. Survivors said she loved working in the church, She spent her later years on the Mothers Board of the Kings Chapel Church of God in Christ in Southampton, under the leadership of Bishop Frank A. White.
A stay-at-home mom who also worked several part-time jobs, she said that her greatest joy was raising her children and being with her family, her survivors said. She also supported hungry children abroad and assisted senior citizens in the community. Survivors said she was looked upon as a second mom to many of her children’s friends. She also enjoyed cooking, exercising and gardening.
She was described by survivors as a “servant of the most high with a deep love for God” and “a woman of prayer and unwavering faith.”
Ms. Claud is survived by five children, Daniel Webster Claud and wife Sandra of Southampton, Delores Hobson and husband Frederick of Alabama, Darlene Claud of Southampton, Debra Chappelle and husband Gregory of Florida, and Doris Bryant of New Jersey; six grandchildren, Anthony Hobson, Christina Hobson, Elizabeth Bryant, Shauncy Claud, Olivia Stewart, Daniel Webster Claud II; and one great-grandchild, Kameron Bullard. She is also survived by five siblings, James Turner, Henry Turner, Katherine Joyner, Nettie Claud and Essie Mae Turner, all of Virginia; many nieces and nephews; and a godson, Ferdinand Lee III.
Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Brockett Funeral Home in Southampton. A funeral took place on August 30 at the Southampton Full Gospel Church. Interment was at Calverton National Cemetery.
