I am an engineer. To people in my profession, facts matter. If they are ignored, people can die.
With the conflagrations overwhelming firefighters on the West Coast, we are being treated to a preview of what can happen when humans ignore facts — in this instance, the fact of global heating caused by human activity. This is not just my opinion. It is attested to by the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and every one of the world’s national academies of science.
The humans who have ignored these facts and their impacts on our lives are not nameless. We have elected them to high public office. I refer to our president and his main supporter, our congressman, Lee Zeldin.
We cannot afford to live in a world governed by those who ignore facts in making national policy. For the sake of our children and grandchildren, they should be removed from office in November and replaced by people who are willing to deal with our problems realistically and based on scientific evidence.
Fortunately we have two candidates who will do that. Joe Biden is an experienced leader who, although not a scientist, is a pragmatist who knows that fighting Mother Nature is a losing proposition.
Dr. Nancy Goroff, the Democratic candidate for Congress in our district, is a scientist and professor at Stony Brook University. She will provide a vitally needed voice of reason in a Congress that, based on my 20 years in Washington, badly needs it.
Let’s vote for change in November.
