Walter D. O’Hearn Jr. of New York and Southampton died on July 5. He was 81.
Born in Montreal, Canada, to Mary and Walter D. O’Hearn, he was a graduate of Portsmouth Priory, Williams College, New York Law School, New York University School of Law and the Advanced Management Program of Harvard Business School. He began his career with King and O’Conor, a law firm in New York. He was president of McGrath Services Corporation, a maritime terminals business. Later, he became a partner in Keane Securities, which merged into Rafferty Capital Markets.
Mr. O’Hearn was a member of the Bathing Corporation of Southampton, the Meadow Club of Southampton, Shinnecock Hills Golf Club and the Lost Tree Club in North Palm Beach.
Survivors said he will be remembered for his quiet strength, generosity, kindness and good judgment.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Denise; three daughters, Meghan Benedict and husband Douglas, Kelly Evans and husband Jeffrey, and Mary Harris and husband Richard; and seven grandchildren, William and Matthew Benedict, Ryan and Tyler Evans, and Declan, Zoe and Walker Harris. He is also survived by three sisters, Eileen O’Hearn, Neill Miller and Julie Taminiau; and a brother, Peter O’Hearn.
A funeral Mass was held on Saturday, July 9, at the Basilica Church of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary in Southampton.
