Walter F. Gale of Bayshore died after a brief illness on June 22, with his wife Methel, by his side. He was 81.

Born in Riverhead, he was the youngest of four children to the late Walter Gale and Mary Gale. After graduating from Southampton High School in 1961, he completed his education at the College of William & Mary Williamsburg, Virginia.

Walter served in the U.S. Army and was a beloved chemistry teacher at Islip High School for 32 years. He enjoyed numerous hobbies including tennis, golf, running, home projects, and lovingly “toting” his wife’s harp to numerous engagements.

He is survived by his brothers, Peter Gale (Gisela) Southampton; Thomas Gale (Alice) of Georgia; and his twin sister Susan Lieto of New Jersey; extended nieces and nephews.

Cremation was private. A memorial service will be celebrated at the West Islip Church of Christ on July 12, at 3 p.m. Arrangements are under the direction of the Overton Funeral Home in Islip, NY.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the West Islip Church of Christ, 600 Montauk Highway, West Islip NY 11795, would be appreciated.

While I respect the journalistic integrity of The Southampton Press, I disagree with your editorial awarding the Southampton Village Ethics Board a “dunce cap” for Open Meetings Law violations [“Gold Stars and Dunce Caps,” Editorial, July 3]. The Ethics Board may very well have failed to follow procedural notice requirements. But the dunce cap belongs to the village mayor and his board majority, whose job it is to ensure that all appointed boards receive proper, up-to-date training in the Open Meetings Law and Freedom of Information Law. Shooting Wildly

As a 30-year litigation-scarred veteran of the sand mining/composting wars waged in Southampton Village and Town, I am a proponent of the amortization of sand mines proposed by the town. A More Nimble Plan

SAT Prep Course Offered by Child Care Center

The Bridgehampton Child Care & Recreational Center is offering an SAT prep course ahead of the August 23 test date. Classes will be held Mondays in July and August, with an additional session on Wednesday, August 13, from 6 to 9 p.m.
