Warren Grover Hamer of Southampton died of natural causes on January 9, 2018. He was 97.

Born in Chicago, Illinois, on June 23, 1920, he was the son of Otto Martin Hamer and Blanche Kalisher Hamer. He graduated from Evanston High School and Northwestern University. In 1946 he received a master’s in business administration from Harvard Business School. During World War II he served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1946, on the staff of the Commander of LST Group 12, and participated in the D-Day invasion of Normandy. He proudly marched as a World War II veteran for many years in the Southampton Veterans Day and Fourth of July parades.

Mr. Hamer’s business career was primarily on Wall Street with The First Boston Corporation, where he was the leading institutional stock salesman. He later joined Corporate Property Investors, a real estate investment trust. In Southampton he was an active member of the Village Planning Board until 2017. Mr. Hamer was known for his sense of humor and love of sports and adventure. In high school he lettered in basketball, baseball and football, and was an all-league halfback. As an adult, he was an avid tennis, paddle, and croquet player, marathon runner and mountain climber. He and his wife, Lyn, summited Mt. Kilimanjaro and Mt. Kenya, and he climbed to the base camp of Mt. Everest when he was 79. He was a member of the Meadow Club in Southampton.

In addition to his wife of 45 years, Lyn Hamer; and his four children from a previous marriage, Faroll Hamer, Holly Hamer, Dean Hamer, Blythe Hamer Gewehr; and five grandchildren, Ivan Peterzell, Haley Gewehr, Russell Gewehr, Christopher Gewehr, and Addie Leder-Zavos, he is survived by a step-daughter, Pam Garrison. His sister, Evelyn Hamer Ruprecht, and his brother, Clarence Hamer, predeceased him.

A memorial service will be held at a later date this spring in Southampton. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Brockett Funeral Home in Southampton.

The Downtown Dilemma

Last week, an Express Sessions event in Sag Harbor focused on the village’s shopping district and explored a puzzle: If last summer was the busiest ever, and the streets of Sag Harbor were, by all accounts, packed on most every day and evening, why were the owners of shops on Main Street and elsewhere in the business district reporting a down year? The answers are elusive, complicated — and, in many ways, universal to every downtown shopping district on the South Fork, from Montauk to Eastport: Southampton, Bridgehampton, East Quogue, Westhampton Beach, Water Mill, Amagansett, East Hampton, Quogue, Hampton Bays. ... by Editorial Board
