Still looking for a special Mother’s Day gift? Look no further than the Water Mill Community House on Saturday, May 7, between 1 and 4 p.m. for Tea & Cookies: A Tea Cup Benefit. In this unique event, you can select a cup, mug or teapot that has been handcrafted by one of the artisans of the Hamptons Clay Art Guild. Have it filled with tea to be enjoyed with cookies on the side and a bit of socializing while sipping, or take it with you to wrap up for mom. Or better yet, start the celebration early and bring mom with you so she can choose her own cup. Each cup costs $20.
The proceeds from Tea & Cookies will benefit the Flying Point Foundation for Autism, which is based in Water Mill, and its programs on the East End.
Another great way to show mom you care is to visit The Press website, 27east.com and post a Mother’s Day dedication. You can find it on the bottom right corner of the home page. Just sign in (create an account if you don’t already have one), and post your virtual words of wonder for mom.
This was a big week for our boys. Last Friday we celebrated the birthday of my youngest son, Jack, who turned 11, and then on Sunday, it was 12-year-old Dylan’s turn to shine. For the last six weeks he’s been training at the YMCA in East Hampton for the Special Olympics, and on Sunday was the regional competition at Connetquot High School. Dylan swam in both the 50-yard freestyle and 25-yard backstroke events, earning a gold medal in both events! I have to admit that when he got in the water for the 50 free, we were surprised to see that Dylan was the youngest and smallest competitor and were worried about the outcome. Once the race got under way, our fears evaporated as Dylan quickly pulled into the lead, finishing at least a third of a pool length ahead of the second-place finisher. Go Dylan!
