Wayne A. Mordes
Wayne A. Mordes of Hampton Bays died of a heart attack on Tuesday, August 2, doing what he loved most clamming in Shinnecock Bay. He was 58.
Born May 16, 1953, in Brooklyn, he grew up in Northport and graduated from Northport High school in 1971. He loved to travel the country and lived in several places, such as St. Thomas, Aspen, Massachusetts and Maine before settling in Hampton Bays in 1984. As the “Famous Lithuanian Painter,” he painted many homes in the Hamptons.
Mr. Mordes was a bay man and loved to clam Shinnecock Bay and Orient Harbor. He cut fish for many years at The Clamman in Southampton. He was also a great chef and was known for his baked clams, smoked fish, and lobster stew. He always kept a garden and grew tomatoes, garlic and herbs to make his own sauce.
He was an animal lover and helped feed feral cats in Hampton Bays for the past four years.
His smile and thumbs up will be sorely missed by many, family said.
He is survived by his fiancée, Ellen Olsen of Hampton Bays; brother, Walter Mordes of East Northport; mother-in-law, Carol VanNostrand of Huntington; brothers-in-law, Hobie VanNostrand and his wife Sandy of Commack, and Peter VanNostrand of Huntington. He also leaves his niece Jennifer Culen and her husband Rich; and many cousins and great friends.
Visiting hours were held on Sunday, August 7, at the J. Ronald Scott Funeral Home in Hampton Bays. Clergy of the Church of St. Rosalie conducted a parish prayer service at the funeral home on Monday, August 8. Interment followed at St. Charles Cemetery in Farmingville.
Memorial donations to the Southampton Animal Shelter, P.O. Box 821 Southampton, NY 11969, or the Animal Rescue Fund, P.O. Box 901, Wainscott, NY 11975, would be appreciated by the family.
