Wayne McQueeney of Southampton died on August 15. He was 73.

He was born on December 30, 1950, in Rockville Center. He grew up in Southampton, attended Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary School, graduated from Southampton High School, and served in the U.S. Navy on the aircraft carrier USS Ranger.

He was an avid golfer, fisherman, sports fan — including Nascar races, and beach lover. You could often find him on the links, at the beach, watching or attending Nascar and Riverhead Races.

He moved to Dutchess County, where he worked alongside his parents at St. Peter’s Cemetery. He then relocated back to Southampton to caddy at Sebonack Golf Club.

He had a great sense of humor, concern for family and friends and was liked by all who met him, according to his family.

He was predeceased by his parents, James and Gloria McQueeney. He is survived by his twin brother, Robert (Michele); sister Debbie (Craig); nephews Sean (Taylor), James (Maru); and the love of his life, Wendy Schneps; along with many extended family, loved ones and friends.

The family would like to extend their gratitude to all the doctors, nurses and caregivers who attended to his needs, care and comfort, especially Unit C at The Hamptons Center and The Phillips Family Cancer Center.

A visitation will be held on Friday, August 23, from 4-8 p.m. at the Brockett Funeral Home in Southampton. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, August 24, at 11 a.m. at the funeral home, followed by interment with U.S. Navy honors at Southampton Cemetery

Memorial contributions may be made to The Phillips Family Cancer Center, 740 County Road 39, Southampton, NY 11968.

But he agreed, because his story is so important — and can help so many others — because he needs a donor kidney. Nearby are The National, which dates to 1911, and Shinnecock Hills, founded in 1891, the celebrity courses that every golfer knows and dreams of playing. Southampton, though, is the overachieving ... by Editorial Board
