Lifelong Sag Harbor resident Wayne C. Mortensen died on November 12 at Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead, from complications of a heart condition. He was 58.
Born June 17, 1950, at Southampton Hospital to Margaret (née Krepela) and Allan Mortensen, he attended St. Andrew’s school and graduated from Pierson High School in 1968. He worked as a marine outboard engine mechanic for Peerless Marine Center in Sag Harbor for many years and later for Spellman’s Marine in Hampton Bays.
Survivors said that, as a member of Alcoholics Anonymous, which he often credited for saving his life, he was thankful for the friendships that helped him in recovery and he tried to give back to others who fighting the same battle.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing and boating up until his health began to deteriorate. According to survivors, one of his greatest moments was at the wedding of his son Wayne C. Mortensen Jr. on October 19, when he had all his sons home and all his family and friends together.
In addition to his wife of 35 years, Diana (née Goodwin) Mortensen of Sag Harbor, and his son, Wayne Jr. and his wife Sarah of Sag Harbor, he is survived by two other sons, John Mortensen of Sag Harbor and Joseph Mortensen of West Brentwood; a brother, Allan Mortensen; two sisters and their husbands, Joan and George Gucker and Margaret and Joseph Fiigon, all of Sag Harbor; and many nieces and nephews.
Mr. Mortensen was predeceased by both his parents.
A prayer service was held on November 17 at Yardley & Pino Funeral Home in Sag Harbor. Cremation followed.
