Southampton Girls Volleyball
Awaits Seed

The Mariners wrapped up one of their best regular seasons in recent memory on Saturday with a 3-1 victory over Mattituck at home. The Tuckers had taken the first set, 25-16, but then the Mariners rattled off three straight victories, 25-18, 25-7, 25-17, to take the match. Southampton finished with a 10-6 record, tied with Babylon for third place in League VII. As of Tuesday morning, it was unknown what seed the Mariners would get in the upcoming Suffolk County Class B playoffs. With Center Moriches having wrapped up the top seed, Southampton should play Babylon in a semifinal match that is tentatively scheduled for this Saturday, November 2, at noon, but where that match will be played was undecided as of press time. The higher seed will host the match. Go to sectionxi.org for updated info.

Hampton Bays Boys Soccer
Finishes Season Strong

The Baymen defeated Southampton, 2-0, at home back on October 17, but then lost the regular-season finale, 3-2, in double overtime at home to playoff-bound Shoreham-Wading River on October 21. Although they finished with a 5-5 League VIII record, which most years would qualify the team for the postseason, the Baymen did not qualify for the Suffolk County Class A playoffs due to their 5-11 mandatory nonleague record. Matthew Pozdniakov and Juan Henao scored the two goals in the game’s first 10 minutes in the win over Southampton. Pozdniakov and Jesus Velasquez gave Hampton Bays a 2-0 first-half lead over Shoreham, which scored twice in the second half to force overtime, then in the second OT for the win.
