Jefferson Leads Bonac Boys Hoops
In its lone game over the holiday break, and first game in nine days, the East Hampton boys basketball team defeated host Eastport-South Manor, 58-48, on December 30. Mason Jefferson finished with a game-high 20 points, that included four three-pointers. Miles Menu added 14 points and Toby Foster chipped in 13 points for the Bonackers, who evened their League V record to 2-2 and their overall record to 4-4.
Bonac Swimmers Compete in Long Island Challenge
Through qualifying times throughout the season, East Hampton swimmers Nick Chavez and Liam Knight competed in the second annual Long Island Challenge Meet which was held on December 19 at the Farmingdale Aquatic Center, along with Dylan Knapik and Zeb Ryan, who earned relay spots. In the meet that pitted Nassau County schools against Suffolk County schools, East Hampton head coach Craig Brierley said it was a very fast meet and his swimmers did well. Chavez placed 14th in the 200-meter individual medley in a personal best 2:06.17 and finished 11th in the 100-yard backstroke, which he finished in 56.23 seconds. Knight placed fifth in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:47.93 and eighth in the 100-yard freestyle in 49.70 seconds. The 400-yard freestyle relay finished 13th, and each swimmer posted best times in their individual heats. Prior to that meet, the East Hampton/Pierson/Bridgehampton boys swim team lost, 88-76, to Northport/Commack in its final nonleague meet of the season on December 17 to fall to 1-2 in League II, 1-3 overall. East Hampton junior Tony Pillajo was named Swimmer of the Meet for swimming very well in the 200 and 400 free relays, despite his goggles falling off on one of the dives. Pillajo did what his coaches asked of him, which is to swim through the issue without stopping and he did just that, giving the relays a chance to swim to solid times still.
East Hampton Girls Hoops Earn First Win
Ana McCormack had 11 points, 11 rebounds and six steals to lead East Hampton to its first victory of the season, 41-32, at Southampton on December 19. Lydia Rowan had 11 points and three steals for the Bonackers (1-3 in League VII, 1-4 overall) and Faith Mack scored a career-high 10 points for Southampton (2-3 in League VI, 2-6 overall).
Campsey Is Champion at Sal DiFazio
Austin “Bronco” Campsey led the East Hampton/Pierson/Bridgehampton wrestling team the Sal DiFazio Holiday Tournament at Half Hollow Hills East on December 28 after he defeated Commack’s Elijah Francois by technical fall (16-0) to win the 108-pound weight class. Juan Roque (116 pounds) and Adam Beckwith (190) each placed second while Josue Elias (124) placed third and Anthony Petersohn (131) and Juan Espinoza (215) each placed fourth. The Bonackers placed fifth at the Cory Hubbard Duals at Westhampton Beach on Saturday, splitting its four matches with victories over Center Moriches and Hampton Bays.
Late-Game Heroics Lead Hampton Bays Girls Hoops
The Baymen trailed Wyandanch by four points with 45 seconds left in a nonleague game on December 27, Eden Brown hit a clutch pull-up jump shot before Taylor Meyers scored four of her team-high 17 points to give Hampton Bays (1-4 in League VI, 3-5 overall) the 50-47 home victory over Wyandanch. Brown finished with 12 points.
Westhampton Beach Girls Hoops Wins Suffolk Holiday Shootout
The Hurricanes defeated Commack (49-43) on December 27, Northport (52-49) on December 30 and Walt Whitman (48-38) on Saturday to win the Suffolk Holiday Shootout. Sandra Clarke hit a buzzer-beating shot just beyond half court with 1.5 seconds remaining in the win over Northport. That was after hitting a floater with 27 seconds left to tie the game. Clarke finished with a game-high 21 points. She also led the ’Canes (4-0 in League V, 5-1 overall) with 17 and 19 points in the wins over Commack and Whitman, respectively. Jasmine Taylor had eight points, 10 rebounds and five steals in the win over Whitman.
Bennett, Hahn Lead Hurricane Boys Hoops
A 21-9 first-quarter outburst by the Westhampton Beach boys basketball team led to a 63-58 home victory over Hauppauge on Monday evening. Jorden Bennett tied a game-high with 19 points and Truman Hahn added 17 for the ’Canes (2-2 in League V, 4-4 overall).
