Finn Byrnes was one of four Bonackers to score in double digits, leading the way with 19 points in the East Hampton boys basketball team’s 66-31 victory at Miller Place on Friday. Toby Foster scored 11 points and Jack Dickinson and Luke Reese each scored 10 points for East Hampton (8-1 in League IV, 10-3 overall).
The East Hampton girls basketball team defeated Smithtown Christian, 62-26, at home on Friday, after having only beaten the Knights by three points earlier this season. Baye Bogetti scored 19 points, Chloe Swickard added 12 points and Caroline DiSunno chipped in with 10 points. East Hampton is 3-6 in League V, 4-8 overall.
Luke Castillo (138 pounds) and Juan Roque (118) both won their respective weight classes on Saturday at the inaugural Anthony Cipriano Invitational at Copiague High School, named after Copiague’s late head coach who died this past July due to liver cancer. The East Hampton/Pierson wrestling team placed third overall behind Commack and St. John the Baptist. J.P. Amaden placed second while Austin “Bronco” Campsey (102), Anthony Petersohn (110), Cooper Ceva (145) and Jose Calderon (172) placed third. Adam Beckwith (160) placed fourth.
The Bridgehampton boys basketball team jumped out on host Ross, 23-5, after the first quarter and went on to win, 65-47, on Friday. It was the ninth game this season the Killer Bees (9-1 in League V, 10-5 overall) have had three double-digit scorers, with Alex Davis leading the way with his game-high 17 points. Mikhail Feaster added 11 points and Kris Vinski scored 10 points. Bridgehampton was coming off of a buzzer-beating 45-43 victory over Port Jefferson at home on January 18. Sai’von Ward, who hit the game-winning shot, scored 13 points, as did Davis. Scott Vinski scored a team-high 14 points.
The Southampton boys basketball team won both of its games by lopsided margins as it continues its quest for another league title. After defeating host Center Moriches, 77-35, on January 18, the Mariners defeated Port Jefferson, 92-43, at home on Friday to improve to 7-0 in League V play, 11-4 overall. Derek Reed scored a game-high 25 points and also had eight assists and four steals, while Naevon Williams scored 20 points and Alex Franklin had 18 points and 12 rebounds. Tyler Blake reached double digits in scoring as well with 10 points.
The Southampton wrestling team competed at the inaugural Anthony Cipriano Invitational at Copiague High School on Saturday and were led by David Castillo who placed second at 285 pounds. He lost his finals match, 10-2, to Amityville’s Jo’Siah Miller.
The Hampton Bays boys basketball team’s 77-43 home victory over neighboring Westhampton Beach on Friday clinched its first playoff berth in 12 years. Kazmin Pensa-Johnson scored 30 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead the Baymen (7-2 in League IV, 12-3 overall) while Patrick Donahue added 23 points and had a dunk in the third quarter. James Powers scored 11 points and Isaiah Lattanzio scored 10 points. Avery Merrihew paced Westhampton Beach (2-7 in League IV, 5-9 overall), which was coming off a 57-40 victory at home over Miller Place on January 18, with 15 points while Jorden Bennett finished with 12 points and Quinn McCormack 10.
Bruno Maffei (152 pounds) and Bobby Stabile (132) championed their respective weight classes to lead the Westhampton Beach wrestling team on Saturday at the inaugural Anthony Cipriano Invitational at Copiague High School, named after Copiague’s late head coach who died this past July due to liver cancer. Stabile pinned Amityville’s Nate Santigago in 2:46 and Maffei won a close 4-2 decision over Northport’s Andrew DeMarco. Liam Anthony (132) and Sal Fracapane (160) each placed third. The Hurricanes placed fifth out of ninth teams.
