Longtime Record
About a week before falling an inch shy, Melina Sarlo came back at the Art Mitchell Meet at Suffolk County Community College in Brentwood on Saturday and broke the school record in the shot put. She threw 31 feet 10 inches surpassing Sarah Van Asco’s 2000 record of 31 feet 9 ½ inches. Laura Martinez won the freshman 3,000-meter race in 11:20.65. Sara O’Brien placed second in the sophomore 3,000-meter in a personal best 11:20.48. Greylynn Guyer placed fourth in the open 1,000-meter race in a personal best 3:12.16. Ryleigh O’Donnell placed second in the open 600-meter dash in 1:40.60.

Halts Losing Streak
The East Hampton girls basketball team defeated host Shelter Island, 51-20, on Friday to end what was a seven-game losing streak dating back to January 8. Katie Kuneth led the Bonackers (3-6 in League VII, 4-10 overall) with 11 points and Anna Dwyer added 10 to lead East Hampton. Sophie Clark scored 11 of Shelter Island’s 20 points.

Top Porters
Avenging a loss to Greenport earlier this season, the Bridgehampton boys basketball team defeated the host Porters, 58-44, on January 24. Mikhail Feaster led the Bees with 15 points, Alex Davis scored 13 and Jai Feaster chipped in with 12. Bridgehampton (7-3 in League VII, 10-5 overall) then defeated host Shelter Island, 65-44, two days later on Friday where Davis scored a game-high 29 points and Jai Feaster scored 21.

Keeps Playoff Hopes Alive
The Pierson/Bridgehampton girls basketball team defeated host Port Jefferson, 38-25, on January 24, and after a 34-24 loss at Mattituck on Friday, defeated host Shelter Island, 54-12, on Monday. The Whalers are 4-4 in League VII, 6-8 overall, and would need to win three of their final five games to qualify outright for the Suffolk County Class B playoffs.

Surpasses Century Mark
The Mariners eclipsed 100 points for the first time this season in their 106-41 victory at home over Center Moriches on Thursday, January 25. They had 10 different scorers led by Tyson Reddick’s 20 points. Dominick White scored 17 points and Alex Franklin finished with 13 points. Southampton (8-1 in League VI, 11-4 overall) also defeated host Mattituck, 81-44, on January 23, a game in which it led 27-9 after the first quarter. White paced the Mariners with 28 points and 10 rebounds. Davon Palmore had 16 points and Naevon Williams added 14 points, six rebounds and five assists.

Places Three at Tournament
Hudson Fox defeated Bellport’s Orion Beadle, 13-5, to place third at 160 pounds at the Paul Dilorio Memorial Tournament at Sachem East High School on Saturday. His older brother, Cole Fox, placed fourth at 190 pounds and Jack Nastri placed fourth at 138 pounds.

Top Wyandanch at Home
The Baymen (4-7 in League V, 6-9 overall) defeated Wyandanch, 70-53, at home on January 24 but then lost their next two games, first at Elwood-John Glenn (69-54) on Friday, then at the same Wyandanch team (65-62) on Monday. Patrick Donahue scored 26 points and six rebounds and James Powers had 18 points, five rebounds and five assists to in the home win over Wyandanch. Isaiah Lattanzio added 15 points, 10 rebounds and five assists.

Hosts Tri-Meet
The Baymen hosted both Islip and Ward Melville for a nonleague tri-meet on Thursday, January 25. They lost, 46-15, to Islip but defeated Ward Melville, 36-21. John DePalma (116 pounds), Kevin Saa Pacheco (124), David Orellana (138), Willem-Dakota Sarkis (170) and Michael Gutierrez (285) all won their matches against Ward Melville via pins. Hampton Bays also defeated host Centereach in a nonleague match the day before. Diego Capellan (124), GianFranco Putzulu (145), Cyrus Gutierrez-Tyler (152) and Sarkis each won their matches by pin. Cristian Kearns (116) won his match in a close 12-10 decision and Angel Valverde won a major decision (11-0) over his opponent.

The Westhampton Beach boys basketball team jumped out to a 21-7 lead after the first quarter of its game at Amityville on Friday and never looked back en route to a 66-55 victory, its seventh in a row. Jorden Bennett led the ’Canes with 17 points, Truman Hahn had 16 points and Andrew Mensch had 15 points.
