South Fork programs like Westhampton Beach’s girl tennis team, Hampton Bays’ girls volleyball team and East Hampton’s field hockey team are boasting strong records as teams look to make a push toward league titles, playoff berths and beyond.
The Westhampton Beach girls tennis team is on a two-game win streak following a narrow 4-3 defeat at the hands of Half Hollow Hills East on September 24.
The team shut out Eastport-South Manor on September 28 before blanking Shoreham-Wading River September 29.
The Hurricanes’ boys soccer team is also on a two-game win streak to improve to 4-6-1 overall and 4-3 in League IV after victories over Bayport-Blue Point and Rocky Point this past week.
Ethan Vogt scored three goals and added one assist and Chance Brindle and Lincoln O’Connell each added a goal and an assist in a 9-0 shutout of the Phantoms September 29. Six others got on the stat sheet.
In a 2-1 defeat of Rocky Point the very next day, on September 30, Brindle and Kade Murphree each found the back of the net and O’Connell picked up an assist. Alex Ajitaza made seven saves in goal.
The girls team is also seeing success following 2-1 losses to Eastport-South Manor and Miller Place. The Hurricanes outlasted visiting Southampton, 3-1, on October 1 to move to 4-4-1 overall and 4-3 in League IV.
Sarah Gormley had two goals and an assist for Westhampton Beach, Khloe Hoda picked up a goal and Katie Baker added an assist. Ava Failla recorded three saves.
Westhampton Beach’s boys cross country team improved to 3-0 overall and 2-0 in League V with a 24-37 win over Rocky Point September 28. The girls cross country team also improved to 3-0 with a 20-37 win over Rocky Point September 28.
The Hurricanes boys volleyball team bounced back from a shutout to East Hampton with a 3-0 sweep of Sayville September 29, 25-20, 25-20, 25-8, to move to 3-5 on the season.
Hampton Bays’ girls volleyball team now sits at an impressive 10-1 on the season with nonleague wins over Mt. Sinai, Greenport/Southold and Shelter Island.
The Baymen bested Greenport/Southold 25-12, 25-10, 25-20 on September 28 and Shelter Island 25-10, 25-11, 25-22 on September 30.
The girls, which are 5-1 in League VII, were one win away from clinching the team’s first playoff berth since 2016, with a match against host Center Moriches on Tuesday, results of which were not available by press time. The Baymen boys soccer team picked up its first win of the season Saturday with a 2-1 win over Miller Place. Edie Cabrera scored on a 25-yard free kick with 1:45 left in the second half to break a 1-1 for Hampton Bays.
Hampton Bays’ girls cross country team suffered its second straight loss September 28, but a narrow one, 23-36, to Kings Park to fall to 1-2 on the season.
The Southampton boys soccer team has responded following a 1-1 draw with Pierson/Bridgehampton with three straight wins.
Most recently, the Mariners picked up a 2-0 shutout of Southold Monday. On September 30, Southampton had a big blanking of Smithtown Christian, 7-0. Jhoseph Garay Montalvo scored two goals, Nick Gonzalez added one goal and two assists and Andrew Panza had a goal and an assist for the Mariners. Christian Duggal also recorded two assists for the Mariners, which improve to 6-3-1 on the season.
The girls soccer team also bounced back from a 5-1 loss to Mattituck/Southold/Greenport September 30 and 3-1 loss to Westhampton Beach October 1 with a 2-2 tie against Miller Place Monday. Juliette Archer scored with 17 minutes left in the second half to tie the score at 2-2 for Southampton. Harper Souhrada made the first goal for the Mariners and Vivienne Archer assisted on both scores. CeCe Ginsberg made seven saves for Southampton, which moves to 4-7-1 overall and 2-6-1 in League IV.
After a 2-1 loss to East Hampton September 23, Pierson/Bridgehampton’s field hockey team bounced back with a 2-0 win at Sayville, before narrowly losing, 1-0, to Harborfields Monday.
Mia Gangemi and Meredith Spolarich both scored in the victory over the Golden Flashes, Maddie Cohen recorded one assist and Cali Wilson made four saves in the shutout. The Whalers are now 4-6 in Division II.
After two straight ties, Pierson/Bridgehampton’s boys soccer team was on a three-game win streak, which was snapped by a 1-0 loss to Babylon October 3. The Whalers are 6-2-2 in League V with a 3-0 shutout of Port Jefferson September 30 and 3-1 edging of Southold two days prior, on September 28.
East Hampton/Pierson/Bridgehampton’s girls tennis team has shut out four straight opponents after losing 7-0 to Westhampton Beach back on September 19. The Bonackers took down Southold/Greenport on September 21, Mattituck on September 23, Southampton on September 28 and Hampton Bays on September 30.
Pierson/Bridgehampton’s boys cross country team picked up its first win of the season with a 20-43 win over Shelter Island September 28. The Whalers are now 1-2 on the year.
It was incorrectly reported last week that the Pierson/Bridgehampton girls volleyball team, now 4-5 in League VIII, lost to Ross when in fact the Whalers blanked their opponents 3-0 September 22.
East Hampton’s field hockey team is now 6-2 in Division II with a 6-0 win over Southampton September 30. Grace Merkert scored three goals for the Bonackers, Toby Allen added two and Kerri O’Donnell recorded two assists, while Casey Stumpf picked up a goal and four others added assists. Caeleigh Schuster made five saves in the shutout.
East Hampton/Pierson/Bridgehampton’s girls tennis team has shut out four straight opponents after losing 7-0 to Westhampton Beach back on September 19. East Hampton’s girls volleyball team has also bounced back, following 3-0 losses to Westhampton Beach and Eastport-South Manor, with a 3-1 win over Miller Place September 30 and 3-2 edging of Rocky Point Monday to improve to 5-6 in League VI.
Caroline DiSunno earned nine kills, three digs and a block; Katie Kuneth, Amaya Pingle and Emma Terry each added five kills, Terry also had 37 digs and Scout Lynch picked up 26 assists in a 25-8, 25-16, 15-25, 25-20 win over Miller Place.
Kuneth had eight kills, Pindly and Terry picked up four, Lynch has 22 assists and nine digs and Chloë Swickard 13 digs in a 25-17, 22-25, 22-25, 25-12, 15-5 victory over Rocky Point.
East Hampton’s boys cross country team improved to 3-0 and 2-0 in League V with a 15-50 win over visiting Wyandanch September 28.
