Following an extensive five-month search, the Westhampton Beach Union Free School District Board of Education announced its next superintendent.

During the January 25 board meeting, Dr. Carolyn Probst was appointed superintendent of schools, effective August 17.

“I am excited to partner with the Board of Education, administrators, faculty, staff and the community to build upon the tradition of success in Westhampton Beach,” Dr. Probst said.

The new educational leader of the Hurricanes is actually returning to the district. She spent eight years at Westhampton Beach High School as an assistant principal and guidance counselor.

She joins the current administration after a stint at Hauppauge Public Schools, where she has served as assistant to the superintendent for educational services and student outcomes since 2017. Prior to her years in Hauppauge, Dr. Probst served as director of academic advancement and innovation for the West Hempstead Union Free School District.

“I began my career in Westhampton Beach and returning to lead the district will be my great honor,” the soon-to-be superintendent said.

Dr. Probst received her bachelor’s degree from American University; her master’s degrees in education leadership, school counseling and psychological counseling from Columbia University; and her doctorate degree in K-12 educational leadership and policy from Vanderbilt University.

In an effort to ensure a smooth transition, Dr. Probst will join the district as deputy superintendent effective July 1. She will work with the district leadership team in this position until assuming the role of superintendent of schools, upon the retirement of current Superintendent Michael Radday.

“I extend my congratulations to Dr. Probst on her appointment as the next superintendent of schools,” Mr, Radday said this week. “I know her to be a dedicated and talented school leader. I look forward to working with her to ensure a smooth transition.”

Board of Education President Suzanne Mensch said the board was excited to welcome Dr. Probst back to Westhampton Beach.

“When interviewing Dr. Probst, she met many of the qualities the board and community expect in our educational leader,” Ms. Mensch said. “She is strategic and thoughtful and brings with her a solid vision for the future of our schools and students. Additionally, her eight years in Westhampton Beach coupled with her current central office leadership experience will be a tremendous resource to our school community.”

Use Discretion

You don’t need to hear it from us, but: Times are tense. It’s a moment when, in our local communities, we need to be more careful to avoid knee-jerk reactions, and while vigilance is a virtue, don’t assume everything you see on social media is what it appears to be. At the same time, communication is going to be key. An incident last week demonstrated that all of us — including local police agencies — need to be aware of the unique moment, and take steps to make sure people are not frightened needlessly. Do the Right Thing

When it comes to New York State’s mistreatment of the Montaukett Nation, it seems like Groundhog Day: A new year, but the same outcome, without fail. It’s insulting, it’s despicable — and it must end. This is the sixth time the State Legislature has put recognition of the Montaukett on the governor’s desk in Albany, with overwhelming, almost unanimous support. There is absolutely no ambiguity about the legislature’s support for the idea, and it’s been championed by local legislators for years. They’ve all done their jobs and deserve a note of thanks. We Mark Our Ballot: Westhampton Beach

Westhampton Beach The departure of Bryan Tymann from the Westhampton Beach Village Board leaves a large pair of boots to fill. After 10 years on the board, Tymann decided this year not to seek reelection for another term. He has declared that his mission was accomplished, noting that he fulfilled all the promises he made as a candidate when he ran for the first time a decade ago. And the proof has been in the pudding: Tymann, along with his constant running mate, Rob Rubio, as well as the other various members of the board, along with mayors Maria Moore ... by Editorial Board

Southampton Village Ballot

This year’s Southampton Village campaign has been active, with lots of information for voters to parse — and, unlike in some recent elections, the back-and-forth between the candidates has been respectful and restrained, even when the differences are significant and the criticism is pointed. This is testimony to the quality of all the candidates for both mayor and the two trustees seats, and it demonstrates that local elections can be hard-fought without being unseemly. In the race for mayor, Bill Manger is the choice — with a few provisos. At the recent debate sponsored by this newspaper, Manger and his ... by Editorial Board
