A pick-up truck was destroyed after it caught fire on Sunrise Highway in Westhampton Saturday afternoon.
The Westhampton Beach Fire Department responded to the vehicle fire at around 2:50 p.m. on the shoulder of the westbound lanes, about a mile west of exit 64. According to a release from the department, the truck was “fully involved in flames” when the first firefighters arrived, but the volunteers were able to quickly extinguish the fire. No injuries were reported. Also, a moderate rain shower at the time helped prevent the fire from spreading to nearby brush.
The department reported sending two chiefs, two engines, a tanker, and a fire police truck while the East Quogue Fire Department sent an engine and a rescue truck, and Southampton Town and New York State police were also on scene. The westbound lanes of the highway were briefly shut down for the duration.
