If the Westhampton Beach girls indoor track team wasn’t on opposing teams’ radars, it certainly is now after the showing it had at the Zeitler Relays on Saturday at Suffolk County Community College in Brentwood. The Hurricanes either won events outright or took home gold in their respective league events.

Rose Hayes, Valerie Finke, Lily Strebel and Kiera Falvey won the distance medley relay, which is 1,200-, 400-, 800- and 1,600-meters run consecutively, in a new school record of 13:18.01, besting the previous record of 13:35. The team not only bested their League IV counterparts — to which the competition was divided by — but every team in the county.

The ’Canes also won the 4x800-meter relay outright in 9:52.96, the only team in the county to finish under 10:00. Hayes, Falvey Jamie Kelly and Oona Murphy made up the winning team.

Anabelle Vellosa, Halle Geller, Trinity Valenzuela and Gabby Wendel won the League IV sprint medley relay, which is 400-, 200-, 200- and 800-meters run consecutively. They finished in 4:59.52. Finke and Emily Tully won the League IV triple jump. Finke reached 32 feet 1 ½ inches while Tully measured out at 29 feet 2 ¾ inches.

Sabra Harry, Madison Phillips and Meghan Kelly finished second in the League IV 3x55-meters shuttle hurdles in 31.74 seconds. Geller, Valenzuela, Vellosa and Alana Dixon finished second in the League IV 4x200-meter relay in 2:00.17. Vellosa, Strebel, Mackenzie Schindler and Katie Baker placed second in the League IV 4x400-meter relay in 4:35.75.

Westhampton Beach also had a group of athletes compete at the prestigious Millrose Games Trials at the Armory Track and Field Center in New York City on January 12. The girl’s 4x4 team of Finke, Vellosa, Tully and Jessica Dunn had the lead after the first leg, according to head coach John Broich, but dropped six placements after that and eventually finished 14th out of 22 schools in 4:20.93, six seconds or so slower than their seeded time.

After placing third in the boys pole vault by reaching 14 feet at the Stanner Games at The Armory on Sunday, Colbie Mason competed, and won the event at the Connetquot Pole Vault Meet on Monday after reaching 13 feet 7 inches.

Westhampton Beach boys and girls are gearing up for the League IV Championships which are this upcoming weekend at Suffolk-Brentwood. The girls will compete Saturday while the boys will compete Sunday. Both meets are expected to start at 2 p.m. Broich said he thinks his team will have a shot to win the league title, but will be pushed by Sayville, Rocky Point and Mount Sinai.

Bayman Garcia Wins The 600 At Eli Acosta

Maxwell Garcia of the Hampton Bays boys indoor track team won the 600-meter run at the Eli Acosta Meet at Suffolk-Brentwood on Sunday. He crossed the finish line in 1:33.81.

Timothy Kraycar took second placed in the shot put after his throw reached 41 feet 1 inch. Arents Hansen finished eighth in the 1,600-meter race in 5:16.61.
