BRIDGEHAMPTON — Brian Conforti, 55, of Bridgehampton was arrested by Southampton Town Police on April 16 at 11:20 a.m. on Montauk Highway near Corwith Avenue and Hull Lane after a caller told police that Conforti had a knife, had stabbed the caller’s vehicle with it and was threatening to kill him. On arrival officers made contact with Conforti, who matched the caller’s description and had a knife visible in his pocket. He was taken to police headquarters and charged with third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, a felony, as well as fourth-degree criminal mischief and second-degree menacing, both misdemeanors. VIEWPOINT: Anthony Carter Was a Good Hire

By Bill Manger I am responding to the recent editorial titled “A Costly Hire” [May 2], regarding Southampton Village Administrator Anthony Carter. As mayor, I seek, in all matters, to do the absolute best for the Village of Southampton. When I was elected in June 2023, our then-administrator, appointed by my predecessor, informed us that she was retiring. I can assure you, I took the recruitment of her replacement very seriously — and any other characterization is false. This hiring was not a “make-good” of any kind whatsoever. My predecessor had, in fact, separated the village clerk position from the ... by Bill Manger

Paddle Time

Paddling season is here! I use a canoe, kayak, prone board or stand-up paddleboard. Every place I paddle is a pleasure. I would like to share some of my favorites with you. Paddle from Connecticut Avenue in Manorville to Riverhead: four hours. Circumnavigate Shinnecock Bay counterclockwise from the Coast Guard Station: six hours. Paddle from Orient Point to Riverhead: nine hours. Paddle from Cedar Point Avenue in Noyac to Long Beach in Sag Harbor: three hours. Paddle from Louse Point in East Hampton to Napeague Harbor Beach and go for lunch at Lunch: three hours. Paddle from Riverhead to Inlet ... by Staff Writer

Misleading

Recent Letters to the Editor implied that conflicts of interest may exist among land-use personnel. In response, a member of Southampton’s Zoning Board of Appeals wrote that board members habitually recuse themselves where conflicts exist [“Repressive Fantasy,” Letters, May 2]. I’m sure that’s true, as far as it goes. In 2018, the ZBA determined that a golf course was permissible as an accessory to a residential subdivision located on 600 acres in the Pine Barrens of East Quogue (known as the Lewis Road Planned Residential Development). I believe one of the ZBA members who approved the golf course served as ... by Staff Writer

The Fig Leaf

Benjamin Netanyahu and his supporters stated that their goal is to eliminate Hamas. They have a right to pursue this goal. Their unstated goal, softened by being referred to as “collateral damage,” is the elimination, or at least drastic reduction, of the Palestinian people by any means available: death from the sky, starvation, destruction of medical facilities, disease spreading in the crowded encampments in southern Gaza, the region that the Palestinian population was “encouraged” to flee to for safety. Or was it to concentrate them into ever smaller spaces to make the killing more efficient? The inevitable population remnant — ... by Staff Writer

Surge of Bigotry

We are witnessing a rising tide of antisemitism in our country. However, its origins are not from the usual suspects. This current surge of bigotry did not originate with white supremacists, neo-Nazis or the KKK. No, it’s coming from the halls of our elite higher education institutes. The demonstrations against the Israeli war effort against Hamas have morphed into the most overt and vile antisemitism. We all should be shocked and appalled by what we are witnessing taking place at these elite campuses. No one should dispute the right these demonstrators have to express their opinion about what is happening ... by Staff Writer

Squandering

We are squandering resources at an alarming rate. We are without the will to stop it. Just stop. Can’t stop using too much water … so sewer. Watch the vernal ponds dry up and disappear and then wonder why. We’re nuts. Lee Foster Sagaponack by Staff Writer

Center Stage

Who benefits from Fred Thiele’s windmill [“State Budget Authorizes Southampton Town To Partner With Stony Brook University for Windmill Repairs, Using CPF Revenue,” 27east.com, April 23]? Certainly not the general public. The trouble is, you cannot see it. Because of the trees and buildings, this windmill is not visible from Tuckahoe Road. From Montauk Highway, you may be able to capture a brief glimpse only if you know where to look as you drive past the Stony Brook Southampton campus. I have a suggestion. Adjacent to Montauk Highway and Tuckahoe Road is a massive lawn that wraps around and surrounds ... by Staff Writer

Who Is Sick?

Ed Surgan stated that our universities are sick and that their student demonstrators only want death to America after it pays off their student loans [“Make-Believe Radicals,” Letters, May 2]. Mr. Surgan was spewing all sorts of bile, but much of what he said in his letter is over-the-top exaggeration and not factual. The New York Times reported that half of the people jailed at Columbia University and at The City University of New York were not students (many were professional external agitators). The Wall Street Journal reported that activist groups trained students for months before campus protests. Our enemies ... by Staff Writer
